Launching SMSC week with a special worship and guest
As part of the term’s worship theme, ‘Who is my neighbour?’ Domenica, the Canterbury Diocese’s Refugee Officer, was invited in to speak about her role in supporting those who move countries, perhaps fleeing their homes from danger and how they might find safety in new places. She used the story of Paddington to help explain how refugees may feel but also how we may respond if a refugee joined our school. There was much to reflect on and our children were sensitive and caring in their discussions which were developed during an SMSC week.
SMSC week with a refugee theme
A reflection/prayer space was set up in the meeting room for a whole day to provide opportunities for children to think about the plight of refugees. With gentle music in the background, posters of refugees around the room and a dingy as a stimulus, the children were invited to write prayers or messages of hope on small cut out backpacks and lifebuoys. These thoughtful, kind messages were displayed in the hall as part of the Gallery. Some have been sent to Domenica, the Diocesan Refugee Officer and were displayed on the diocese website.
Bishop Rose in school
Bishop Rose and the diocesan schools officer, Mrs Natalie Ralph, visited school to see artwork and creative writing the children had produced as a result of SMSC week. They were both impressed with the children’s creativity but also the children’s understanding of this sensitive and challenging topic. Bishop Rose enjoyed a special afternoon’s worship led by our Equality Ambassadors and gave some words of encouragement and support in loving others and being courageous in standing up for what is right.
A large number of parents filled the hall after school seeing the showcase of amazing work. Here the children were able to teach their own families about Refugees.
What an amazing week of learning about the world around us!
